Snapshot
A saved copy of a system, disk or set of data as it existed at one particular moment
What's it for?
Keeps a point-in-time copy so a system or dataset can be restored, compared or investigated later.
For example…
Before a major database upgrade, ops takes a snapshot so they can restore the previous state if the migration fails.
Before a risky upgrade, operations takes a database snapshot so the previous state can be restored if the change corrupts data
